Emily A. Clark’s piece on short drapery really caught my eye. I love that she detailed all the benefits of a shorter window treatment.
She hit just the right points… they can work well in more casual rooms and you can go more bold/colorful with pattern and print.

Awhile back, we simplified the room by choosing a dark, but subtle blue for the walls (Sherwin Williams Foggy Day). I knew I somehow wanted to work in a pattern for the window treatment. White roman shades have great functionality, but serve little purpose as far as style goes…
Then I found this fabric, Robert Allen’s St. Etienne in Lapis. 100% cotton, but similar in look to linen (a more loose weave). I knew it would be perfect to use as shorter curtains, thank you Ms. Clark.
I made two quick panels for each side of the window (only used 1 yard). Folded the edges, ironed them down, and did a simple stitch down the sides. I clipped the curtains up with drapery rings and called it a day. I decided not to line the panels to allow light to enter.
I love the pattern against the stark background of blue, white, and black. It really pops and I am able to pull out a variety of accent colors. Also, the curtains are short enough not to interfere with the sink…. and all the water action that goes on with small children!
So simple, but great style for a ‘working’ room.

. . . . . .
I used the same treatment for the window over my kitchen sink,
something so familiar and nostalgic about this look.

Are you IN on the short drape trend?
